Christopher Grange Centre for Adult Blind

Mission Statement
We aim to provide and continually develop an holistic environment for our residents that they may live with independence, confidence and dignity.

Our motto is: "Caring, Encouraging, Forging Independence"

Christopher Grange is dual registered with Liverpool Social Services Department and Liverpool Health Authority to provide Residential and Nursing care for adult Blind and Partially Sighted people. There is provision for 77 persons in four separate Residential Care Units and there are 28 single occupancy rooms in the Nursing care Unit.

Philosophy Of Care
Christopher Grange is committed to providing as ordinary a life as possible for our residents. Our general aim is to provide care, security and love for people who can no longer cope at home because of their visual/physical impairment. Whilst promoting a philosophy of independence for the individual, we recognise that our residents require a greater degree of support than they can receive in their own home.

The environment was carefully designed and built to assist visually impaired people to cope with their disability. It provides the comforts of home, freedom from worry, company and a quality of care which is supportive. We also recognise that the families of our residents should be as actively involved in the care for their loved ones as they desire. Every effort is made to meet the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and emotional needs of our residents. In order to do every resident has a key-worker who will liaise between other carers, family and other service providers to promote privacy, independence, choice, dignity, rights and fulfilment.

Christopher Grange was purpose built for people with a visual impairment to facilitate their independence and freedom of movement. It was the dream of one man who understood the needs of those with visual impairment and it incorporates many novel features to assist them such as tactile floor and wall surfaces, and marked handrails throughout to assist with navigating, the careful use of light, lighting and colours.

Facilities
All bedrooms are fully furnished and fitted with an appropriate call system and have their own toilet facilities. The bedrooms of the residential units are on the first floor which are accessed by two lifts and multiple stairways. Several sitting areas are also located on the first floor corridors which are wide and spacious and in the newly refurbished sun lounge. On the ground floor are a large sitting room and quiet room in each house. The Nursing Unit is entirely single storey, at ground level.

Because the building is large and airy residents can enjoy the privacy of their own room or the company of others in the sitting rooms, the 'market place' where residents' social events are also often held, the WRVS coffee shop or the seated courtyard gardens which separate houses and are very attractive from spring to late autumn. A smoking room is provided.
